A New Christmas Sweater Tradition

October 16, 2016

I am loving this colder weather. It really makes me feel like hunkering down to knit. I decided to start a new tradition of knitting my little guy a Christmas sweater every year.

I absolutely love this Christmas sweater pattern! I spent hours searching on Ravely, and I ended up loving this pattern the most.

Want to make your own for someone special in your life? I used the Anders pattern. Here are my tips:
  • Materials used. Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in Jalapeno and White; needles in sizes 5 and 6.
  • Sizing. Since I was using a worsted weight yarn, I sized down one size based on the pattern (which is written for DK yarn). That seemed to work out fine!
  • Vikkel. I ended up not loving the gaps I would get after doing the vikkel braid. So, I left off the vikkel braid on the sleeves. Please leave a comment if you know how to fix the gaps!
  • Knitting stress. My hands were aching while I did the body part of the sweater. I was having to push the stitches around the needles the whole time I knit the body. I think I will do this with magic loop next time to save my wrists.
  • Colorwork tightness. I love the tip in here to size up during the colorwork section. I knit my colorwork tighter than solid color knitting (see an example here). So I usually get a wonky tight section when I switch between a solid and a colored section. Sizing up a needle fixed the problem!
  • Colorwork dominance. I was debating whether to switch color dominance for the trees section (i.e., from having the white pop on the green background to having the green pop on a white background). I decided to go ahead and switch dominance (by changing from holding the white as the "underneath" color to holding the green as the "underneath" color).
I hope you love knitting this sweater as much as I did!  If you want to see more of my current projects, you can find me on instagram (SaltyCrafter) and on ravelry (bsl19)!
