I saw on Facebook that one of our family friends was thinking about buying one of these cute hats from Very Jane for her son. They are super cute. However, I'm on a crochet kick, and I thought I could easily recreate the look for her new 6 month old son. I think I got pretty close!
Instructions:
I used Easy Makes Me Happy's Monkey Hat Pattern as the base. I just changed the main color of the body to purple, and I used green as the contrast color.
For the extra monster embellishments:
The monster bobbles on top of the head (make two in two different contrasting colors):
Row 1. Chain 5.
Row 2. In second chain from hook, half double crochet. Three more Hdc. (4 total).
Row 3. Chain two. Two hdctog. Fasten off.
Monster eyes:
Smaller monster eye:
Row 1. Chain 2. In second chain from the hook, 8 hdc. Slip stitch to join.
Row 2. SC in each hdc from previous row. Slip stitch to fasten off.
Larger monster eye:
Row 2. SC in each hdc from previous row. Slip stitch to join.
Row 3. 2 hdc in each stitch from previous row. Slip stitch to join.
Row 4. SC in each stitch from previous row. Slip sticth to fasten off.
Braided tassels:
Measure out how long you'd like the tassels to be on a piece of yarn in the main color. Add about an inch more (they shorten as you braid them). Fold the yarn over to double that length. Cut five pieces of yarn in the color combinations you like best (I picked three pieces of the main color, two of the contrasting colors).
Pull all five pieces of yarn through a hole in the bottom of the earflap. Even up the strands. Divide into three sections (you'll have sections of 3, 4, and 3 strands each). Braid. Use a piece of yarn to tie the bottom. Trim the ends to even them out.
Repeat for the other side!
Finally, place embellishments wherever you'd like. I added buttons to the eyes to make them look more like the Very Jane monster hats, and I also added a red yarn mouth. This sucker is going in the mail to our family friend this week! Send me a picture if you try to make this hat!
