Very Cabley Mittens

It's finally getting colder here, and I realized that I don't have a full hat and mittens set for myself! Do you all have this same problem? All of your Works In Progress tend to be for other people? I had a lot of fun making my own hat and mittens set. I made a Hermione hat with a fur pom, and then I was trying to create a set of mittens to match. I didn't want to add the lace element from the Hermione hat, because I thought that the holes might make my hands cold. I finally settled on this great Very Cabley Mitten pattern from Kelly Porpiglia.

I love how these turned out! I especially liked the rounded top of these mittens. This is the full set:

One more pic with my knitting buddy.

Want to make your own? Here are my tips on the Very Cabley Mitten pattern:
  • Materials.  Worsted weight yarn (I used Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in Wonderland Heather). Needles in size 4 and size 6.
  • Overall impression of the pattern. This is a great pattern! Very well written and easy to follow. Because these are worsted weight mittens, they knit up relatively quickly.
  • Future modifications. I think in the future, I will just do a ribbing for the cuff. I like the look of the cabled cuff, but I think I would like the look of "less cables."
Hope you guys have a chance to make some of these as well. Looking for other ideas for mittens? I love mittens too! Check out these Northman mittens, herringbone mittens, kitten mittens, druid mittens, and more (see the label tab on this site). I'm always searching for great free mitten patterns. Here are some more adorable free patterns I've found on AllFreeKnitting:
  • Slip Stitch Minky Mittens. Ah! What a cute pattern - love the slipped stitches. Simple, but elegant. I also like that these are sized for kids to adults.  I was reading recently that as knitters, we all need to find "basic recipes" for our knitting. This could be it (let me know if you try them)!
  • Maplewood Mittens. I am really liking mittens that use texture to create interesting designs. And, this pattern is for worsted weight yarn - another plus as we head into holiday knitting crunch time!
  • Warm Winter Mitts. Speaking of quick knits for the holiday season, what could be better than bulky weight mittens! Love the pattern along the cuff - and with all the time you save by using bulky yarn you might be able to add in a cute hat to match for a perfect Christmas stocking stuffer!
