Nautical Christmas Mittens

December 16, 2014

I have been wanting to make these mittens ever since I picked up knitting in January. These are so pretty! My mother in law has a nautical theme at her house, so I thought it might be nice to make her some nautical Christmas mittens. I love how these turned out!

Make Your Own Nautical Mittens!
  • Pattern. I used Tori Sieierstad's Selbuvu or Not Mitten pattern.
  • Materials. Size 2 circular needles and Knit Picks Palette Yarn in Whirlpool and White (one ball each - and I have plenty left over after two mittens).
    • Needle notes. I just bought my size 2 circular needles in nickel from Knit Picks.  I was really disappointed to have to buy them, because I was thinking an interchangeable knitting needle set would include this size, but alas! They do not.
    • Yarn notes. This is my first time trying the Palette yarn. I keep seeing people on Ravelry using it, so I have been wanting to try it. I bought it during the Knit Picks sale! What a good deal! It seems like it happens the week of Thanksgiving, in case you want to try to catch the sale next year.  I really like the Palette colors. The feel is good - it's not scrumptious yarn, but it is nice yarn.
  • Pattern tips:
    • Mitten ribbing. I did 12 rows of ribbing in the background color, then used the contrast color for an increase row. I followed this with three rows of background color stockinette stitch.
    • Back pattern. I used the alternate back pattern. To make it easier, I cut out that pattern and taped it next to the seahorse pattern. I used a highlighter to "check off" the rows I finished.
    • Thumb. I used the long thumb pattern by accident (it's the one on top).  It is so long! I do not recommend - the short pattern is probably the right size for a normal thumb!
    • Knitting with two strands at once. I used two-handed knitting for this. My continental stitch is a little lumpy, but I figure that just takes more practice. I may try to knit a mitten with all continental stitch to try to get better tension in the future.
Happy knitting and happy holidays!
