Baby Panda Hat and Booties!

November 3, 2014

It's baby season! It seems like everyone we know is having a baby this year (so exciting)! In honor of baby cuteness, I came up with this super quick Baby Panda Hat and Booties project. I'm including my very first knitting pattern (free!) below. Hope you like it!

Baby Panda Hat:
Materials: 1) Worsted weight yarn in Black and in White.  2) Size 7 knitting needles. 3) One crochet hook (size H). Not sure what my gauge is, as I have not yet figured out how gauge works!

This hat is knit in the round. I used magic loop (check out Very Pink's great tutorial on simple magic loop - this changed my life! Or at least, my knitting life ha).

Hat Rim.  Use your black yarn:
Cast on 64.
Row 1: Join to work in the round. Knit all stitches.
Row 2: Purl all stitches.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 6 rows total of garter stitch.

Main body of the hat. Switch to white yarn for the rest of the hat.
Rows 8 - 20: Knit all rows (stockinette stitch).

Start decreases.
Row 21: *Knit 6, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 22: Knit all stitches.
Row 23: *Knit 5, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 24: Knit all stitches.
Row 25: *Knit 4, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 26: Knit all stitches.
Row 27: *Knit 3, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 28: Knit all stitches.
Row 29: *Knit 2, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 30: Knit all stitches.
Row 31: *Knit 1, knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Row 32: *Knit 2 together.* Repeat this pattern all the way around.
Tear off yarn and weave tail through all remaining stitches. Close tightly and weave in ends.

Ears: Using your black yarn and your crochet hook:
Row 1. Make a crochet magic loop and 8 single crochets into the loop.  Pull tight.
Row 2. Make two single crochets in each hole.
Row 3. Make a single crochet in each stitch.
Leave a long tail for sewing in the ears.
Make a second ear and then sew both ears on. Voila! Easy Baby Panda Hat.

  1. Knit one row then purl one row is stockinette stitch. Knit all is garter stitch.

    1. Wrong. The hat is worked in the round so to achieve a garter stitch you would need to knit one row, purl the next, and repeat.

  2. Ah! Thank you for the correction. I'm new to knitting, so still learning the terms!

  3. Is this hat sized for a newborn or older (like 3 months, 6months, etc.)?

  4. It's sized at about 0 to 3 months. Hope that helps!

  5. Can't find the booties page. I am hoping you might put the two patterns together.

    3. Hi! The booties pattern is not my own, it is by a blog named A La Sascha. However, it's a great and easy pattern. Here's the link:

  6. I'm not sure what yarn you're using but a standard worsted weight yarn with size 7 needles always comes out to the size of a toddler/small child at 64 stitches around. If you want to make it for a baby under a year I'd recommend using less stitches or just gauging and measuring yourself as all yarn and knitting styles can vary by person.

    1. Thank you! Appreciate the feedback. My baby has a larger sized head, so your point is well taken.

  9. Hi, Nataley! You could knit this on straight needles, but it would require some reworking and seaming. If you are newer to knitting (like me), it might be easiest to buy a cheap pair of circular needles to see if you like circular needles. Hope that helps - would love to see how it turns out!

  10. What size does this panda hat fit? NB, 3mo, 6mo, 12mo? If it's here I'm missing it.
