Norwegian Kitten Mittens!

December 26, 2014

I fell in love with these kitten mittens when I saw them on Pinterest! They are just too cute. I thought they'd make a cute gift for my little sister, who has been wanting to adopt a kitten. Looking through Ravelry, I found these sweet mittens from Fun9.  However, they are in a child's size, so I adopted them for a women's adult size small.  Want to make your own? See my tips below! I also posted more pics on my Ravelry page.

Make Your Own:

  • Materials.
    • Worsted weight yarn in the body color (here, white) and in a contrast color (here, blue).
    • Needles in size 5.
    • Tapestry needle.
  • Pattern background. The original pattern was written by Alyoops as a top-down pattern. I followed Cloverlaine's instructions for making these bottom-up.  The chart for my mittens comes from Fun9 here.
    • Cuff: Cast on 36 stitches and join in the round. Do a k1, p1 rib for 13 rows.
    • Thumb gusset:  K18, m1 front and back, K18, m1 front and back. Change to body color.
      • Row 1. Knit all.
      • Row 2. Place marker, m1r, k2, m1l, place marker, knit to end.
      • Row 3. Knit all.
      • Row 4. Slip marker, m1 r, knit to next marker, m1l.
      • Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 14 stitches between markers (12 rows total).
      • Very important: While you are working the thumb gusset, start Fun9's Fair Isle chart on row 9.  It wasn't clear how to make the thumb pattern follow the chart, so I just swapped between colors for every stitch.
      • Row 13. Place 14 thumb stitches onto waste yarn or a holder.
    • Mitten hand.  Join the remaining stitches in the round and knit all stitches for 20 more rows (or until the top of the mitten covers the top of your middle finger).
    • Ears. I used Cloverlaine's ear instructions and made each ear have 12 stitches total.
    • Thumb. Pick up the 14 stitches from the waste yarn. I knit four rows where the colors switched every stitch. Then, I switched to the body color for four rows. Next, knit two rows in the contrast color. On the last row, knit 2 together all the way around.
    • Bind off, weave in all ends!
Happy knitting!

  4. Thank you! You could knit them on double pointed needles. This is a good tutorial: http://verypink.com/2011/04/27/getting-started-with-dpns/ I personally prefer magic loop: http://verypink.com/2012/10/17/simple-magic-loop/ Good luck!

  8. Hi! I have a question about this pattern. I just finished the first mitten (and I love it!). For the second mitten, do I need to change how I do the thumb? Or do I make it the same way and just put the cat face on the opposite side?
